Day 10: The Split Blog

Dad Stats:
Most recent temperature: XX.XF
Most recent blood pressure: XXX/XX
Today's white blood cell count: 0.89
Weight: XXX lb

Today Vic and I traded off of Dad watch to make sure everybody got a break.
Vic left Birmingham about the same time I was able to get out of Huntsville so we passed somewhere on the interstate. Unfortunately today I was not able to catch the nurse for vitals before bed time so all we have for now is Dad's WBC Count. We are way up from yesterday and the expectation is that the count will at least double each day.

The first thing Dad wanted to do when I got in was go for a walk. Dad told me that it was his 5th walk around the transplant ward for a total of 15 laps for the day! Dad is really starting to feel good but is still not eating much. I went over to Milo's for a burger and Dad said he would like one but was pretty sure he could not eat it. I figure that in the next 5 days he will be able to get one so there is not point in pushing our luck. For this of you who are reading along I have included an image of a Milo's double cheeseburger. And yes that is gravy all over the burger. The icing on the burger is the sweet tea / humming bird food. We are very fortunate to have such fine dinning just one block from the hospital!

Because I was never able to see vic today I could not get all of her inputs. Lucky for everybody out there Vic prepared some text for me to attach:

Dad's WBC count has more than doubled again today! It is up to .89 from .4 yesterday! When the doctor came in to look at Dad today she noticed that Dad seemed like he felt better today and that he has a "light in his eyes" today. I am also ecstatic to report that she informed us that dad is doing very well and will probably be out of here by the end of the week! Also she said that when Dad is discharged he will have to stay in lodging close to the hospital for two weeks, just in case, but he will be able to go out and about and do normal things like walking outside, going out to eat, and going to the movies!
Dad has spent most of the day so far doing his usuall walking and sleeping routine. He is still pretty tired most of the time and his mouth is still sore. The doctor said this morning that as Dad's WBC count goes up his mouth will heal and they will be able to gradually reduce the morphine.
Al is coming down this afternoon to take over for me until Thursday afternoon. He will complete today's blog...
Stay tuned for the update tomorrow! Also, feel free to post what you think Dad's WBC count will be tomorrow. The winner will not really get anything but it will be pretty cool to see if anybody had curve fit the current trend...

  2. Great news! We are supremely happy to hear that Rod is improving and that the white count is going up. It sounds like his energy is picking up as well. Thanks for reporting and the update. I'll say 1.2 for the WBC tomorrow.

BTW I hope that sandwich tastes better than it looks.
